Quando fu inaugurato nel 1665, il municipio, quello che ora è il palazzo, era il più grande del suo genere in Europa. Questo doveva chiaramente simboleggiare la ricchezza della città.
Per evitare che l'edificio affondasse nel terreno paludoso di Amsterdam, furono infissi 13.659 pali di legno nel suolo, in modo che l'edificio fosse sostenuto dallo strato di sabbia sottostante e stabile. Questo è ancora visibile nel disegno di Jan Luyken del 1709.
Il municipio divenne palazzo solo nel 1805.
