Als es 1665 in Betrieb genommen wurde, war das Rathaus, das jetzt der Palast ist, das größte seiner Art in Europa. Dies sollte eindeutig den Reichtum der Stadt symbolisieren.
Um zu verhindern, dass das Gebäude im sumpfigen Boden von Amsterdam einsinkt, wurden 13.659 Holzpfähle in den Boden geschlagen, damit das Gebäude von der darunterliegenden stabilen Sandschicht getragen wird. Dies ist noch auf der Zeichnung von Jan Luyken aus 1709 zu sehen.
Das Rathaus wurde erst 1805 zum Palast.
