Lorsqu'il a été mis en service en 1665, l'hôtel de ville, qui est maintenant le palais, était le plus grand de son genre en Europe. Cela devait clairement symboliser la richesse de la ville.
Pour éviter que le bâtiment ne s'enfonce dans le sol marécageux d'Amsterdam, 13 659 piliers en bois ont été enfoncés dans le sol, afin que le bâtiment soit soutenu par la couche stable de sable en dessous. Cela est encore visible sur le dessin de Jan Luyken datant de 1709.
L'hôtel de ville ne devint un palais qu'en 1805.
