Toen het in 1665 in gebruik genomen werd was het stadhuis wat nu het paleis is het grootste in zijn soort in Europa. Dit moest duidelijk de rijkdom van de stad symboliseren.
Om te voorkomen dat het gebouw in de moerassige Amsterdamse bodem zou zinken werden 13 659 houten palen in de grond geslagen, zodat het gebouw zou gedragen worden door de onerliggende stabiele zandlaag. Dit is nog te zien op de tekening van Jan Luyken uit 1709.
Het stadhuis werd pas een paleis in 1805.
