For mere end 150.000 år siden, under den næstsidste istid, kom store sten (bl.a. størkningsgesteiner) fra Skandinavien til dette område. Under udgravningen af Zanderij Maarn er der fundet mange sten, som senere blev samlet på Zwerfsteneneiland i midten af søen. På billedet kan man tydeligt se, at de forskellige slags sten er arrangeret som en kompasrose omkring højttårnet. På grund af den unikke samling har provinsen Utrecht udnævnt Zwerfsteneneiland Maarn til geologisk monument. Zwerfsteneneiland kan kun besøges under vejledning af en guide.
