Hace más de 150,000 años, durante la penúltima era de hielo, grandes piedras (entre otras, rocas ígneas) llegaron a esta área desde Escandinavia. Durante la extracción en Zanderij Maarn se encontraron muchas piedras, que luego se recopilaron en la Isla de Piedras Errantes en el centro del lago. En la foto se puede ver claramente que las diferentes variedades de piedra están dispuestas como una rosa de los vientos alrededor del poste de alta tensión. Debido a la colección única, la provincia de Utrecht ha designado la Isla de Piedras Errantes de Maarn como un monumento geológico. La Isla de Piedras Errantes solo se puede visitar con la guía de un acompañante.
