Oltre 150.000 anni fa, durante l'ultima era glaciale, grandi massi (tra cui rocce ignee) giunsero in quest'area dalla Scandinavia. Durante lo scavo della Zanderij Maarn sono state trovate molte pietre e successivamente raccolte nell'isola dei massi trasportati, situata nel mezzo del lago. Nella foto è ben visibile che i vari tipi di pietre sono disposti a forma di rosa dei venti attorno al traliccio dell'alta tensione. A causa della raccolta unica, la provincia di Utrecht ha dichiarato l'isola dei massi trasportati di Maarn un monumento geologico. L'isola dei massi trasportati è visitabile solo con la guida di un accompagnatore.
