Navnet Schijf stammer fra Swerte Scive: sort skive, hvilket var stikket tørv, der blev udvundet fra moseområderne i det nuværende Schijf. Det var tørv af høj kvalitet, der blev udstukket i tynde plader og derefter stammet, så det lignede skiver. Swerter scive blev udtalt som Swert Schijf, som senere er blevet 'Het Schijf'.
