Il nome Schijf deriva da Swerte Scive: disco nero, che si riferiva alla torba estratta dalle zone paludose dell'attuale Schijf. Si trattava di torba di alta qualità, estratta in sottili fette e poi pressata, in modo tale da assomigliare a dischi. Swerter scive veniva pronunciato come Swert Schijf, che è poi diventato 'Het Schijf'.
