Der Name Schijf stammt von Swerte Scive: schwarze Scheibe, was gestochenen Torf bedeutet, der aus den Moorgebieten des heutigen Schijf gewonnen wurde. Es handelte sich um Torf von hoher Qualität, der in dünnen Platten gestochen und dann gestampft wurde, sodass er wie Scheiben aussah. Swerter scive wurde als Swert Schijf ausgesprochen, was später 'Das Schijf' wurde.
