El nombre Schijf proviene de Swerte Scive: disco negro, lo que era turba extraída de las zonas de turba de la actual Schijf. Se trataba de una turba de alta calidad que se extraía en finas capas y luego se prensaba, para que parecieran discos. Swerter scive se pronunciaba como Swert Schijf, que más tarde se convirtió en 'El Schijf'.
