Le nom Schijf vient de Swerte Scive : disque noir, qui était de la tourbe extraite des zones de tourbières de l'actuel Schijf. Il s'agissait de tourbe de haute qualité qui était extraite en fines plaques puis piétinée, de sorte qu'elle ressemblait à des disques. Swerter scive se prononçait comme Swert Schijf, ce qui est devenu plus tard 'Le Schijf'.
