Engang blev Esbeek forbundet med omverdenen via en damplokomotivbane. Et navn som "Oude Trambaan" i udkanten er et levende bevis på det. Denne linje førte fra Belgien via Esbeek, Hilvarenbeek og Goirle til Tilburg. Hannes Verhoeven lavede en skulptur, hvor forbindelsen bliver afbildet. Det er muligt, at han også blev inspireret af tidens faktorer, drengen i sit moderne tøj, som holder sin forældres hånd, der stadig går i mode fra 30'erne.
