Allerede i 1230 blev der rapporteret om befæstningen af Heukelum. Lige nu bliver de gamle bymure, som for øjet lå skjult under en skråning, genoprettet til deres tidligere storslåethed. En besværlig opgave, da den oprindelige konstruktion ikke må rives ned eller beskadiges. Den gamle mur er i så dårlig stand, at den ikke kan restaureres. Det er derfor besluttet at opføre en ny mur foran den gamle, naturligvis efter forlægget af originalen, så Heukelum, også på grund af sin lidt højere beliggenhed, genvinder sit historiske udseende.
