I de første årtier af det 18. århundrede blev Via Crucis-ceremonierne i Guimarães, under fasten, allerede organiseret af Irmandade da Consolação og Santos Passos.
Til dette formål blev kors spredt i forskellige dele af byen, og fremstillingen af de forskellige trin i Kristi lidelse blev udført af en figur fra Braga, på leje. I 1726 begyndte Broderskabet i forskellige dele af byen at opføre en granit korsvej, bestående af syv små kapeller, fyldt med livagtige figurer af malet træ.
