Der Kemmelberg ist mit seinen 156 Metern der höchste Punkt der Provinz Westflandern.
Tief unter dem Kemmelberg wurde kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg im größten Geheimnis der sogenannte Commandobunker von Kemmel gegraben.
Der Kemmelberg ist, wie die meisten Hügel in der Umgebung (Rote Berg, Schwarze Berg, Scherpenberg, Katsberg, Kasselberg, Wouwenberg, Kluisberg, Watenberg, ...) aus einer Dünenformation entstanden, als die Nordsee noch bis dahin ins Land reichte. Im Dünen sand war eine Menge Eisen. Dies bildete durch Oxidation mit dem Sand Sandstein. So haben diese Hügel die Zähne der Zeit überstanden.
