Der Kemmelberg ist mit seinen 156 m der höchste aller Westflämischen Hügel und gleichzeitig der höchste Punkt der Provinz Westflandern. Es ist daher nicht verwunderlich, dass das Gebiet zu einem provinziellen Domän geworden ist. Was vielleicht mehr überrascht, ist, dass der Kemmelberg eigentlich ein alter Sandbank ist, als die Nordsee bis hierher kam. Durch das viele Eisen-Sandstein im Boden widerstand der Kemmelberg der Erosion und wurde so zu einem der wichtigsten Blickfänge in der Landschaft der Westhoek.
