La Kemmelberg, con sus 156 m, es la más alta de todas las colinas de Flandes Occidental y también es el punto más alto de la provincia de Flandes Occidental. No es de extrañar que el área se haya convertido en un dominio provincial. Lo que quizás sorprende más es que la Kemmelberg es en realidad un antiguo banco de arena cuando el mar del Norte llegaba hasta aquí. Debido a la gran cantidad de arenisca ferruginosa en el suelo, la Kemmelberg resistió la erosión y se convirtió en una de las principales atracciones del paisaje de la Westhoek.
