The Kemmelberg with its 156 m is the highest of all West Flemish hills and is also the highest point of the province of West Flanders. It is therefore not surprising that the area has become a provincial domain. What is perhaps more surprising is that the Kemmelberg is actually an old sandbank when the North Sea came all the way here. Due to the large amount of iron sandstone in the soil, the Kemmelberg resisted erosion and thus became one of the most important eye-catchers in the landscape of the Westhoek.
