Il Kemmelberg è con i suoi 156 m la più alta di tutte le colline delle Fiandre Occidentali ed è anche il punto più alto della provincia delle Fiandre Occidentali. Non c'è quindi da meravigliarsi che l'area sia diventata un dominio provinciale. Ciò che forse sorprende di più è che il Kemmelberg è in realtà una vecchia barriera di sabbia quando il Mare del Nord arrivava fino a qui. A causa della grande quantità di arenaria ferruginosa nel terreno, il Kemmelberg ha resistito all'erosione ed è diventato così uno dei principali punti di attrazione nel paesaggio della Westhoek.
