Der Erfinder von Jommeke, Jef Nys (1927-2009), hatte eine ganze Menge Familie in Koksijde und verbrachte auch regelmäßig Zeit an der Küste in Koksijde. 1992 verwendete Jef Nys die Küstengemeinde für einen Teil der Schauplätze in der Geschichte Die Mandoline von Caroline. Im selben Jahr veranstaltete das Stripfestival Koksijde eine schöne Ausstellung und veröffentlichte eine Sonderausgabe des Comics mit zusätzlichen Seiten. Mehr als 30 Jahre später ehren Nys' Nachfolger erneut die Verbindung zu Koksijde in der Comicreihe. Das Skelett des Pottwals Valentijn erhielt 2024 nicht nur einen endgültigen Ruheplatz im NAVIGO Fischereimuseum, das Tier wurde auch im von Standaard Uitgeverij veröffentlichten Jommekesalbum Pottwal Valentijn verewigt. Die Fahrradroute lässt Sie einige Orte kennenlernen, die die reichen Fischerzählungen von Koksijde lebendig halten.
