Asse war zusammen mit Elewijt, Binche und Blicquy einer der vier Hauptorte der Nervier. Die Nervier waren ein belgischer Volksstamm, der zur Zeit der Eroberung durch Julius Caesar im Norden Frankreichs und im Süden Belgiens lebte, zwischen Schelde und Samber. Der Stamm kontrollierte einen wichtigen Teil des großen Handelsweges von Köln nach Amiens (die Chaussée Brunehaut).
