Die Koppenberg, der legendäre Hügel von Melden, sorgte in der Vergangenheit für einiges Spektakel während der Ronde van Vlaanderen. Hier fiel Jesper Skibby im Jahr 1987, als sein Fahrrad von einem offiziellen Begleitfahrzeug des Belgischen Radsportverbands überfahren wurde. Dies führte zu erheblichem Volkszorn, was zur Folge hatte, dass die Koppenberg jahrelang aus der Strecke gestrichen wurde.
Eddy Merckx bemerkte einst über die Koppenberg Folgendes: 'Man könnte den Fahrern auch, das Fahrrad im Nacken, eine Treppe hochsteigen lassen.'
Die 430 m lange Kopfsteinpflasterstraße hat eine maximale Steigung von 22 %. Der gesamte Anstieg ist 600 m lang und reicht von 13 m bis 77 m.
