The Koppenberg, the legendary hill of Melden, has provided quite a spectacle during the Tour of Flanders in the past. It is here that Jesper Skibby fell in 1987, with his bike being run over by an official follow car of the Belgian Cycling Union. This resulted in considerable public outrage, which led to the Koppenberg being removed from the course for years.
Eddy Merckx once remarked about the Koppenberg: 'Riders could also be made to climb a ladder with their bike on their back.'
The 430m cobbled path has a maximum gradient of 22%. The complete climb is 600m long and rises from 13m to 77m.
