Bereits am Mittag des 10. Mai 1940 wurde diese Region zum ersten Mal mit dem Krieg konfrontiert. Die Vorposten der 7. französischen Armee zogen durch die Gemeinden Scheldewindeke und Oosterzele nach Kasterlee. Außerdem hielt ein Truppentransport der 4. französischen Infanteriedivision in Scheldewindeke an, um sich vorübergehend in einer Reihe von lokalen Quartieren zwischen Gent und Uitbergen niederzulassen. Das Hauptquartier dieser Division ließ sich in Moortsele nieder. Aber bald gab es auch Bewegung in die entgegengesetzte Richtung: Flüchtlinge aus dem Konfliktgebiet.
