Già intorno a mezzogiorno del 10 maggio 1940, questa regione fu confrontata per la prima volta con la guerra. I reparti del 7° esercito francese si spostarono attraverso i comuni di Scheldewindeke e Oosterzele verso Kasterlee. Inoltre, a Scheldewindeke, un trasporto di truppe della 4ª divisione di fanteria francese si fermò per stabilirsi temporaneamente in una serie di cantoni locali tra Gand e Uitbergen. Il quartier generale di questa divisione si stabilì a Moortsele. Ma ben presto ci fu anche movimento nella direzione opposta: rifugiati dalla zona di conflitto.
