Al rond de middag van 10 mei 1940 werd deze regio voor de eerste maal geconfronteerd met de oorlog. De voorposten van het 7de Franse leger trokken langs de gemeenten Scheldewindeke en Oosterzele naar Kasterlee. Daarnaast hield in Scheldewindeke een troepentransport van de 4de Franse infanteriedivisie halt om zich tijdelijk in een aantal lokale kantonnementen tussen Gent en Uitbergen te vestigen. Het hoofdkwartier van deze divisie vestigde zich in Moortsele. Maar al snel was er ook beweging in de tegengestelde richting: vluchtelingen uit het conflictgebied .
