Déjà vers midi le 10 mai 1940, cette région fut confrontée pour la première fois à la guerre. Les avant-postes de la 7e armée française passèrent par les communes de Scheldewindeke et Oosterzele vers Kasterlee. De plus, un transport de troupes de la 4e division d'infanterie française s'arrêta à Scheldewindeke pour s'installer temporairement dans plusieurs cantonnement locaux entre Gand et Uitbergen. Le quartier général de cette division s'établit à Moortsele. Mais bientôt, il y avait aussi du mouvement dans la direction opposée : des réfugiés en provenance de la zone de conflit.
