Already around noon on May 10, 1940, this region was confronted with war for the first time. The outposts of the 7th French army moved through the municipalities of Scheldewindeke and Oosterzele toward Kasterlee. In addition, a troop transport of the 4th French Infantry Division halted in Scheldewindeke to temporarily settle in a number of local camps between Ghent and Uitbergen. The headquarters of this division established itself in Moortsele. But soon there was also movement in the opposite direction: refugees from the conflict area.
