Das Kreuz in blauem Stein wurde Ende des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts von den französischen Truppen beschädigt. Während der Französischen Revolution waren alle christlichen Symbole tabu. Ab 1795 gehörte Ostbelgien, wie der Rest Belgiens, zur Französischen Republik. Weweler war Teil des Departements Ourthe, dessen Hauptstadt Lüttich war. Nach zwanzig Jahren französischer Herrschaft wurde Ostbelgien 1815 auf dem Wiener Kongress an das Königreich Preußen annektiert.
