Die schwarze Erle (Alnus glutinosa) wächst gut auf recht nassen Flächen. Das Blatt ist umgekehrt eirund, glänzend und dunkelgrün. Die Früchte heißen Erlenzapfen und bleiben den ganzen Winter am Baum hängen.
Das Holz wurde verwendet, um Brückenpfähle und Schleusentore zu machen, da es stabil ist und lange unter Wasser hält. Aus den Blättern, den Früchten und der Rinde stellte man Farben her.
