De zwarte els (Alnus glutinosa) groeit goed op vrij natte stukken. Het blad is omgekeerd eirond, glanzend en donkergroen. De vruchten heten elzenproppen en blijven de hele winter aan de boom hangen.
Het hout werd gebruikt om brugpalen en sluisdeuren te maken aangezien het stevig is en lang bewaard onder water. Uit de bladeren, de vruchten en de bast maakte men verf.
