El aliso negro (Alnus glutinosa) crece bien en terrenos bastante húmedos. La hoja es ovalada invertida, brillante y de color verde oscuro. Los frutos se llaman conos de aliso y permanecen colgando del árbol durante todo el invierno.
La madera se utilizó para hacer pilotes de puentes y puertas de esclusas, ya que es resistente y se conserva bien bajo el agua. De las hojas, los frutos y la corteza se fabricaba pintura.
