The black alder (Alnus glutinosa) grows well in fairly wet areas. The leaves are reverse oval, shiny, and dark green. The fruits are called alder cones and remain on the tree all winter.
The wood was used to make bridge piles and sluice gates since it is strong and lasts long underwater. From the leaves, fruits, and bark, paint was made.
