Das Belfort von Doornik glänzt nicht umsonst auf der UNESCO-Welterbeliste. Dieser gotische Glockenturm ist schließlich der älteste von Belgien. Dieses mächtige Symbol der städtischen Freiheiten wurde vermutlich erbaut, nachdem der französische König Philipp II. August 1188 ein Freiheitsprivileg erlassen hatte. Das kleinere Belfort dürfte aus der Gründung stammen, auch wenn es am Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts während des Baus des großen Belforts verändert wurde. Dieses Belfort enthält die Glocken und die Uhr und zeigt eine große architektonische Einheit. Die Restaurierungsarbeiten des 19. Jahrhunderts und in geringerem Maße die des 20. Jahrhunderts gaben dem Belfort sein heutiges Aussehen. Bald wird zudem ein Ausstellungsraum eingerichtet werden.
