The belfry of Tournai shines for a reason on UNESCO's World Heritage list. This Gothic bell tower is, after all, the oldest in Belgium. This powerful symbol of urban freedoms was presumably built after the French King Philip II Augustus issued a charter of liberties in 1188. The smaller belfry is believed to date from the time of its establishment, even though it was altered at the end of the 14th century during the construction of the large belfry. This belfry houses the bells and the clock and displays great architectural unity. The restoration works of the 19th century, and to a lesser extent those of the 20th century, gave the belfry its current appearance. Furthermore, a museum space will soon be established.
