Le beffroi de Tournai brille non sans raison sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. Cette tour de guet gothique est en effet la plus ancienne de Belgique. Ce puissant symbole des libertés urbaines aurait été construit après que le roi français Philippe II Auguste ait émis une charte de liberté en 1188. Le plus petit beffroi daterait de la fondation, bien qu'il ait été modifié à la fin du 14ème siècle lors de la construction du grand beffroi. Ce beffroi abrite les cloches et l'horloge et présente une grande unité architecturale. Les travaux de restauration du 19ème siècle et dans une moindre mesure ceux du 20ème siècle ont donné au beffroi son apparence actuelle. De plus, un espace muséal sera bientôt aménagé.
