Der Beginn des Krieges machte die Ruhe im stillen Dorf Oekene zunichte. Am "Fliegenden Montag" passierten Tausende Flüchtlinge das Dorf, und es ging das Gerücht um, dass Deutsche heranstürmten. Dann bekam Oekene Besuch von britischen und französischen Soldaten, bevor die Deutschen das Dorf besetzten.
Fliegender Montag
Bis zum Montag, den 24. August, kannten die Einwohner von Oekene den Krieg nur aus der Zeitung. Im Laufe des Tages kamen allerdings plötzlich Tausende belgische Flüchtlinge aus der Landesmitte geströmt. Es dauerte schließlich noch fast zwei Monate, bevor die Deutschen Oekene tatsächlich besetzten.
Internationaler Besuch
Die ersten Kriegsmonate sorgten für einen unvergleichlichen Zustrom von Truppen fremder Herkunft.
