The beginning of the war shattered the calm in the quiet village of Oekene. On "Flying Monday," thousands of refugees passed through the village, and rumors spread that Germans were storming in. Then Oekene was visited by British and French soldiers, before the Germans occupied the village.
Flying Monday
Until Monday, August 24, the inhabitants of Oekene knew the war only from the newspaper. However, throughout the day, thousands of Belgian refugees suddenly poured in from the central part of the country. It ultimately took almost two more months before the Germans actually occupied Oekene.
International Visit
The first months of the war brought an unparalleled influx of troops from foreign origins.
