Oostakkerdorp ist eine Dreisiedlung, deren Geschichte möglicherweise im frühen Mittelalter begann. Das Gebiet nordöstlich des heutigen Gent gehörte zum Sint-Baafsabtei. In diesem Gebiet können einige ältere Siedlungskerne oder villae lokalisiert werden. Möglicherweise war das heutige Oostakkerdorp die Dreis bei dem relativ wichtigen Hof Puigem. Seit der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts stand am Platz eine Sint-Laureins-Kapelle, die im 17. Jahrhundert durch die Sint-Amandus-Kirche ersetzt wurde, welche jedoch im Ersten Weltkrieg schwer bombardiert und später wieder aufgebaut wurde.
