Oostakkerdorp es un drisito, cuya historia podría haber comenzado en la temprana Edad Media. El área al noreste de la actual Gante pertenecía a la abadía de San Bavón. En esa área se pueden localizar algunos núcleos de asentamientos más antiguos o villae. Es posible que el actual Oostakkerdorp fuera el drisito de la relativamente importante granja Puigem. Desde mediados del siglo XIV, en la plaza se encontraba una capilla de San Laurencio, que en el siglo XVII fue reemplazada por la iglesia de San Amando, la cual fue bombardeada gravemente durante la Primera Guerra Mundial y más tarde fue reconstruida.
