Oostakkerdorp is a driessite, whose history may have started in the early Middle Ages. The area northeast of present-day Ghent belonged to the Sint-Baafsabdij, in that area a number of older settlement centers or villae can be located. Possibly the current Oostakkerdorp was the dries near the relatively important puigem farm. Since the middle of the 14th century there was a Sint-Laureinskapel on the square, which was replaced in the 17th century by the Sint-Amandus church, which was heavily bombed in the First World War and later rebuilt.
