Oostakkerdorp est un hameau, dont l'histoire pourrait avoir commencé au début du Moyen Âge. La région au nord-est de l'actuelle Gand appartenait à l'abbaye de Saint-Bavon. Dans cette région, plusieurs noyaux de peuplement plus anciens ou villas peuvent être localisés. Il est possible que l'actuel Oostakkerdorp était le hameau près de la ferme relativement importante de Puigem. Depuis le milieu du 14ème siècle, une chapelle Saint-Laurent se tenait sur la place, qui fut remplacée au 17ème siècle par l'église Saint-Amant, laquelle fut cependant lourdement bombardée pendant la Première Guerre mondiale et reconstruite par la suite.
