Oostakkerdorp is een driessite, waarvan de geschiedenis mogelijk in de vroege middeleeuwen begon. Het gebied ten noordoosten van het huidige Gent behoorde toe aan de Sint-Baafsabdij, In dat gebied kunnen een aantal oudere nederzettingskernen of villae worden gelokaliseerd. Mogelijk was het huidige Oostakkerdorp de dries bij de relatief belangrijke hoeve Puigem. Sinds het midden van de 14de eeuw stond aan het plein een Sint-Laureinskapel, die in de 17de eeuw werd vervangen door de Sint-Amanduskerk, welke echter in de Eerste Wereldoorlog zwaar werd gebombardeerd en later werd heropgebouwd.
