Der Bahnhof von Bodegem lag im Ersten Weltkrieg entlang einer wichtigen Zugverbindung zwischen Brüssel und Gent und wurde dadurch vier Jahre lang von deutschen Soldaten überrannt. Truppen, Waffen und Verwundete, all das passierte entlang von Bodegem. Die deutschen Soldaten beanspruchten im Sommer 1914 die Bahnlinie und bewachten sie Tag und Nacht. All diese Soldaten mussten nachts unterkommen. Deshalb entschied man, alle Soldaten in den nahegelegenen Höfen unterzubringen, wie zum Beispiel in der Honsemhoeve.
