The station of Bodegem was located in WW I along an important train connection between Brussels and Ghent and was thus flooded with German soldiers for four years. Troops, weapons, and wounded soldiers all passed by Bodegem. The German soldiers took over the railway line in the summer of 1914 and guarded it day and night. All those soldiers had to find shelter at night. Therefore, it was decided to house all the soldiers in the nearby farms, such as in the Honsemhoeve.
