Het station van Bodegem lag in WO I langs een belangrijke treinverbinding Brussel-Gent en werd daardoor vier jaar lang overspoeld door Duitse soldaten. Troepen, wapens en gewonden, het passeerde allemaal langsheen Bodegem. De Duitse soldaten eisten in de zomer van 1914 de spoorlijn dan ook op en bewaakten die dag en nacht. Al die soldaten moesten 's nachts onderdak vinden. Daarom besliste men om alle soldaten in de nabijgelegen hoeves te huisvesten, zoals bijvoorbeeld in de Honsemhoeve.
