Fort von Merksem -- Fort Merksem ist ein Fort des Typs „Fort mit reduit und nasser Graben“ und war Teil der Stellung von Antwerpen. Es wurde von 1871 bis 1882 aus Backstein gebaut und später, 1911 und 1912, nochmals mit unbewehrtem Beton verstärkt. Das half jedoch nicht, denn zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs verfügten die Deutschen über die Dicke Bertha, eine Mörser, die den Beton aus großer Entfernung durchdringen konnte. Zu Beginn des Krieges kam das Fort nicht zum Einsatz und wurde sogar kurz vor dem Fall von Antwerpen im Oktober 1914 von der belgischen Armee gesprengt, um zu verhindern, dass es unbeschädigt in die Hände der Deutschen fiel. Verschiedene Vereine haben dort jetzt ihren Sitz und es gibt auch ein Sportgelände.
