Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde ein Programm zur Berufsausbildung der untergebrachten Jugendlichen im 'Institut' hinzugefügt, nämlich eine Matrosenausbildung. Eine Matrosenausbildung mitten im Wald ist jedoch schwierig ohne Schiff. Daher wurde in der nahegelegenen Wiese ein Nachbau eines Handelsschoners errichtet, um den herum ein Teich gegraben wurde. Der Dreimaster ist inzwischen verschwunden, aber die 'Schiffsgrube' besteht nach wie vor.
