Der Name dieser Eichenplantage stammt vom französischen Namen Bois-de-Cuisinères, wo französische Truppen ihre Feldküchen unterbrachten, und nicht in Bezug auf den britischen Generaloffizier gleichen Namens, wie manchmal fälschlicherweise angenommen wird.
In der Nacht vom 22. April 1915 starteten die Deutschen den ersten Giftgasangriff des Krieges an der Westfront. Ziel ihres Angriffs war der Ypern-Vorstoß, und sie konzentrierten ihren initialen Angriff auf zwei französische Divisionen, die 45. und die 79. Bei dem Angriff am Abend des 21. waren die beiden französischen Divisionen schlecht vorbereitet, um mit dem Chlorgas umzugehen, und brachen prompt zusammen, was eine vier Meilen breite Lücke in der Frontlinie hinterließ.
